Game of Thrones tour Belfast landscape along the Northern Ireland coast

Game of Thrones Tour Belfast

Game of Thrones tours from Belfast: Studio Tour, Causeway Coast, Winterfell

Why Belfast Works

Why every Northern Ireland Game of Thrones trip starts in Belfast

Production was centred in Belfast for all eight seasons. Titanic Studios housed roughly 106,000 square feet of stage space and the show's interiors; Linen Mill Studios in Banbridge, 30 minutes south on the A1, took the rest. Almost every publicly accessible exterior filming location is within day-trip range, concentrated in County Antrim along the Causeway Coastal Route to the north and County Down to the south and east.

Dublin can be used as a base for a single day trip (the Studio Tour does run a Dublin coach package), but Dublin to Belfast is roughly 90 minutes each way and most outdoor locations are 3 to 4 hours from Dublin. Multi-day Game of Thrones trips work much better from Belfast.

What these three tours don't cover

Honest limits, so you can decide whether you need additional bookings:

  • Castle Ward on-site experiences. The Winterfell coach tour visits Castle Ward but does not include the on-site archery, costumed cycling, or direwolf experiences (booked separately through Clearsky Adventure / Winterfell Tours, ~$37–$48 per person).
  • Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. The Causeway Coast tour stops at Larrybane (Renly's Camp) but the ~$20 rope bridge crossing is not included on most operators.
  • Lunch on coach tours. Typically a pub stop at the Fullerton Arms in Ballintoy (Door of Thrones #6) or similar; pay locally, ~$13–$19.
  • Pollnagollum Cave / Fermanagh. The Brotherhood Without Banners hideout is a 2-hour drive west of Belfast and not on standard tour itineraries; requires a self-drive day.
  • Glass of Thrones walking trail. The free 1.5-mile trail in Belfast itself is self-guided. More on Belfast city for fans →

Filming Locations

Headline Game of Thrones filming locations near Belfast

The six sites below are the most-visited and most-photographed within day-trip range of Belfast. The full reference covering all 20+ publicly accessible filming locations — with drive times, what each played, and entry costs — is on a separate page.

The Dark Hedges

An 18th-century beech avenue planted in 1775 by the Stuart family. Played the Kingsroad in Arya's Season 2 escape with Yoren, Gendry, and Hot Pie. Cars are banned on Bregagh Road; ~1 hour from Belfast. Free.

Ballintoy Harbour

Lordsport / Pyke in Theon Greyjoy's Season 2 return. A small sheltered Iron Islands harbour reached by a steep narrow road from the village. ~1h 15 from Belfast. Free. Door of Thrones #6 at the Fullerton Arms in town.

Cushendun Caves

The 400-million-year-old caves where Melisandre gave birth to the shadow assassin in Season 2 and where Jaime kills Euron in Season 8. Walkable from Cushendun village. ~1h 30. Free.

Castle Ward (Winterfell)

An 820-acre 18th-century National Trust estate on Strangford Lough. The Old Castle Ward farmyard is where Bran, Robb, and Jon practise archery and Robert Baratheon arrives. ~45 min south of Belfast. Estate parking ~$13/car (free for NT members).

Tollymore Forest Park

The Haunted Forest. The Stark family find the direwolf pups here in Episode 1, and the White Walkers' opening sequence was filmed at the same spot. 600-hectare forest park near Newcastle. Vehicle entry ~$6.

Linen Mill Studios

About a third of the series was filmed here. Now the only officially licensed Warner Bros. and HBO Game of Thrones attraction, opened February 2022. ~30 min south of Belfast on the A1. Studio Tour visitor guide →

In Belfast Itself

Free Game of Thrones attractions in Belfast city

Three pieces of the show live in Belfast itself, all free or close to it. The Glass of Thrones trail runs 1.5 miles along the Maritime Mile from the AC Hotel by Marriott to HMS Caroline — six monumental stained-glass windows depicting Stark, Baratheon, Targaryen, the White Walkers, the Iron Throne, and Lannister. The Iron Throne window sits directly opposite the working Titanic Studios where the show was filmed. Self-guided, ~30 minutes.

The Doors of Thrones passport spans ten carved doors at pubs and hotels across Northern Ireland, made from beech trees felled at the Dark Hedges in Storm Gertrude (2016). The Belfast door (#10) is at the Dark Horse pub on Hill Street — closed Sundays.

The Game of Thrones Tapestry at the Ulster Museum (Botanic Gardens) was rolled and put into climate-controlled storage in late 2025 after five public displays since 2017. It is not currently on permanent view; check the museum directly before relying on it.

After Game of Thrones

What's filming in Northern Ireland now

HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the Game of Thrones prequel based on George R.R. Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg" novellas, returned to Titanic Studios in 2024. Season 1 premiered in January 2026; season 2 began filming in late 2025, with parts shot in Spain. New Northern Ireland locations include Glenarm Castle (Co. Antrim), Tollymore Forest, Myra Castle (Co. Down), the Mourne Mountains, Cave Hill in Belfast, and the Galboly hidden village in the Glens of Antrim. Several Belfast tour operators are already adding Dunk & Egg stops to their itineraries.

Coming From Dublin?

Game of Thrones tour from Dublin or Belfast: which makes sense

Dublin to Belfast is roughly two hours by road each way, so a Dublin-departure Game of Thrones tour usually means a 12-hour day. Most visitors get a shorter, richer experience by overnighting in Belfast and choosing a Belfast-departure tour from the comparison above.

Day-trip from Dublin

Workable for a single full day, but expect 4–5 hours of road time before and after the actual filming locations or studio attraction.

One night in Belfast

Unlocks both the Studio Tour and a full Antrim Coast or Winterfell day at sensible pace, plus Belfast itself in the evening.

Two nights in Belfast

The strongest set-up for fans — one day for the official studio tour, one day for a Causeway or Winterfell route, with no rushed transfers.

Practical Information

What to know before booking

Trip length

Two nights covers one of the three pillars and feels rushed. Three nights gets you the Studio Tour and a Causeway Coast day. Four to five nights covers all three plus a Belfast city day. Full itineraries →

Realistic budget

Mid-range, per person, ex-flights: ~$450 for 2 nights, ~$700 for 3 nights, ~$900–$1,300 for 4–5 nights. Hotels swing this most. Off-season cuts accommodation 20–30%.

Best time to visit

May–September for warmest weather and longest daylight; April–May and September–October for fewer crowds and autumn light. Avoid the 12 July fortnight (Loyalist marching season disruption). Studio Tour is open year-round and indoor.

Weather and packing

Wet, cool, changeable year-round. Temperatures rarely exceed 20°C / 68°F even in mid-summer. Pack layers, a waterproof shell, and shoes you do not mind getting muddy. Coastal sites are exposed.

Currency

Northern Ireland uses pound sterling (£), not the euro. Major cards accepted everywhere. NI-issued banknotes are legal tender across the UK but occasionally refused in mainland England — change them before flying onward.

Children on tours

Studio Tour welcomes families with kids' tickets from ~$6. Game of Thrones Tours coach does not allow under-14s; Brit Movie Tours requires under-12s to be accompanied. Check the operator's age policy before booking a family trip.

Booking window

Studio Tour and coach packages from Belfast and Dublin sell out on weekends and school holidays. Book ahead. Most outdoor locations have no booking; just turn up.

Souvenirs

Steensons in Belfast crafted the show's jewellery (including the Hand of the King badge) and sells official replica pieces. The Studio Tour shop is the world's largest GoT retail outlet. Thomas Ferguson & Co. of Banbridge supplied the Tapestry's linen.

Why Visitors Book

Common reasons travellers choose these Belfast tours

4.8/5 Studio Tour

Travellers book this for the official access angle: sets, costumes, props, and a simpler Belfast transfer than self-organising Banbridge logistics.

4.8/5 Causeway Route

The largest review count reflects broad appeal. It works even for mixed groups where some care more about Giant's Causeway than the show itself.

4.9/5 Winterfell Trek

This route stands out for immersion, guides with production links, and stronger appeal to fans who want Castle Ward and forest scenes.
